Overview
Epilepsy is a rapidly evolving field. In the last few years, new algorithms for the treatment of new-onset seizures have been developed and new technologies have revolutionized the way we perform epilepsy surgery and brain stimulation to improve seizure control. The purpose of this activity is to update community neurologists and pediatric neurologists, as well as other healthcare providers working in epilepsy centers across the country, on these updates in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment.

Objectives
  1. Identify the distinction between acute symptomatic, provoked and unprovoked seizures and the associated risk for epilepsy.
  2. Outline a systematic approach in evaluating patients who present with a first seizure.
  3. Distinguish the optimal method for invasive EEG evaluation for epilepsy.
  4. Explain the rationale for using electrical seizure stimulation and limitations.
  5. Review the concept behind invasive and noninvasive targets for neuromodulation to treat epilepsy and other brain disorders.
