Date & Location

Target Audience
Academic/Research, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Nurse Practitioner, Nursing, Physician Assistant

Overview
Physicians within Northwestern’s kidney program deal with referring physicians from the Midwest. From this vantage point, it is evident practicing physicians often fail to employ the latest diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the treatment of kidney disease. For example, recent clinical trials suggest less toxic and equally effective approaches to treating glomerulonephritis. Many patients with kidney disease are not recognized early enough and vascular access for dialysis or referral for kidney transplantation is not made in a timely fashion, putting patients are risk of worse outcomes. The treatment of Hepatitis C, now revolutionized with directly acting anti-viral therapy, is an important topic for the practicing nephrologist. However, the pace of change is so rapid as multiple new drugs and clinical trial results have been released over the last year. Knowing the safest and most effective medications and regimens to use for patients with ESRD is critical to eradicating the infection. Practicing physicians can learn from and mirror these approaches.

Objectives
  1. Describe the role of FGF23 in the progression of cardiovascular disease and its links to CKD progression.
  2. Review the emerging role of home dialysis and frequent dialysis therapies in improving outcomes in ESRD.
  3. Discuss the approach to the timing of dialysis access and the new techniques available to patients and providers.
  4. Identify patients with glomerulonephritis that will benefit from more aggressive immunosuppressive therapy and how to approach maintenance therapy.
  5. Define the latest recommendations for blood pressure control in different age groups and patients with CKD.
  6. Explain the indications for immunosuppression conversion in kidney transplant recipients.

Registration

The fee is $40 for attending physicians and $20 for trainees, nurses and other healthcare professionals. Continental breakfast, refreshments and a light lunch are provided. Space is limited. No refunds will be issued after February 19.
