Overview

This CME conference provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary educational update on Wilson disease, a rare but treatable disorder that is frequently underdiagnosed and mismanaged in clinical practice. Despite advances in understanding copper metabolism and disease phenotypes, clinicians across hepatology, neurology, psychiatry, genetics, and primary care continue to face challenges related to delayed diagnosis, recognition of atypical and extrahepatic presentations, and uncertainty regarding optimal treatment selection and long-term monitoring. Rapidly evolving diagnostic tools and emerging therapies further underscore the need for timely, evidence-based education.

Objectives
  1. Apply a systematic diagnostic approach to Wilson disease using clinical, biochemical, and genetic tools.
  2. Select and monitor chelation and zinc therapies based on disease phenotype, stage, and patient factors.
  3. Manage neurologic and psychiatric manifestations with pharmacotherapy, botulinum toxin, and rehabilitation.
  4. Determine indications for liver transplant and implement hepatic surveillance protocols.
  5. Evaluate emerging therapies including novel chelators, gene therapy, and gene editing approaches.
  6. Implement multidisciplinary care for special populations including pediatric transition, pregnancy, and extrahepatic complications.
