Overview
An annual two-day Symposium on the topic of Child Maltreatment provided by the Child Abuse Pediatrics Division at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. The purpose of the Symposium is to bring awareness to the different topics/themes of child abuse and neglect to a diverse audience, to help educate individuals that work on child abuse and neglect cases. The Child Maltreatment Symposium will consist of 9 lecturers that will present on topics associated with sub-populations within the field of child maltreatment. We will also present a topic on wellness for providers. At this year's Symposium, the Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics will collaborate in-person and virtually with experts within the field of pediatric medicine, law enforcement, and social work within the field to combat child abuse and neglect.

Objectives
  1. Identify the basic concepts and definition of ethics and various ethical considerations related to child maltreatment
  2. Describe how outcomes for children, families, and legal proceedings can be affected by using subjective information, by reliance on non-evidence-based information, and by biased decision making
  3. Outline sources of cognitive errors in cases of possible child abuse
  4. Describe the potential applications of clinical informatics to improve identification, documentation, and coordination in cases of suspected child maltreatment.
  5. Recognize current limitations in health information systems that impact multidisciplinary collaboration in child protection work.
  6. Identify 5 potential symptoms of problematic symptoms of Secondary Traumatic Stress.
  7. Define youth problematic sexual behavior
  8. Define the fundamentals of preventive legal advocacy and pre-petition representation as a tool to combat unnecessary child welfare system involvement.
  9. Identify strategies to help ensure high quality science is presented in the courtroom
