Mental Health Care in the Pediatric Clinic - Training for Pediatricians (12 chapters)

A series of 12 modules geared towards educating pediatric clinicians through the creation of a coherent model aimed to help diagnose and treat common mental health problems.

1. Describe the key elements and participant roles in the collaborative care model
2. Describe key elements of a model for identifying and treating mental health symptoms and conditions
3. Recognize the ages of onset and risk factors for common pediatric mental health conditions
4. List the anxiety disorders, describe their presentation, and outline the evidence base for treatment with medication and cognitive behavioral therapy
5. List the depressive disorders, describe their presentation, and outline the evidence base for treatment with medication and cognitive behavioral therapy
6. Outline a systematic approach to safety assessment and planning in children with suicidal ideation or thoughts of self harm
7. Describe the presentation of ADHD, and outline the evidence base for treatment with stimulant and non-stimulant medication, as well as for supportive, non-medication treatment
8. Recognize side effects of commonly used psychotropic medications and how to educate patients and families about them, and how to manage them
9. Identify the benefits and problems with mental health screening in general pediatrics
10. Outline the basics of parent management training, particularly elements that can be briefly taught in pediatric office encounters
