Overview
This activity will advance the knowledge and skills of providers caring for pediatric patients in acute care situations. Presentations will include topics of evidence -based clinical practice guidelines for treating children in the emergency department and primary care settings with varying emergent medical conditions. Topics include toxicology, urological emergencies, judicious use of antibiotics in PED, endocrine emergencies, opiate use and abuse in adolescents, and pediatric gynecological emergencies. Also included are Breakout Simulation Sessions on point of care ultrasound (POCUS), focusing on the impact of POCUS in optimizing the care provided in real pediatric patient cases, Simulation for high acuity pediatric events focusing on effective teamwork & communication with clarified team roles within the ED and an opportunity to meet the experts in Pediatric Emergency Medicine Nursing.

Objectives
  1. Identify, evaluate and appropriately manage urgent penile issues that are likely to present to the Emergency Department.
  2. Explain the national initiatives of antimicrobial stewardships
  3. Implement evidence-based strategies in clinical practice that contribute to the prevention of youth overdoses.
  4. Recognize signs of pediatric intoxications that are associated with significant morbidity or fatality.
  5. Identify underlying endocrine causes of common presenting symptoms to the emergency room.
  6. Describe the approach to work-up and initial treatment for pediatric gynecologic cases in the ER.
  7. Illustrate the impact of Point of Care Ultrasound in optimizing the care provided in real pediatric patient cases.
  8. Demonstrate effective teamwork & communication with clarified team roles within the ED.
  9. Review nurse-patient-family dialogue in times of hardship and loss in the ED with ongoing support from the PCP.
