Overview
One-day lecture for primary care providers speaking on conditions and injuries impacting their young patient athletes and how to manage them. Topics will include allergy-induced asthma, sports and activity with CHD, ACL injuries, eye injuries, dental trauma, return to play after concussion and other injuries, infectious risks with sports participation, finger and hand injuries and finally avoiding burnout and keeping a positive attitude.

Objectives
  1. Allergy-induced Asthma- objective to follow

  3. Recognize potential activity/sports limitations/restrictions for different forms of pediatric heart disease
  4. Dispel some myths and hopefully alleviate some angst regarding pediatric cardiac disease and exercise
  5. Develop strategies for primary provider collaboration with pediatric cardiology to optimize care
  6. Identify history and exam findings that should prompt imaging and/or orthopaedic referral.
  7. Describe the short- and long-term consequences of ACL injury
  8. Identify common types and mechanisms of sports-related eye injuries in pediatric populations, and recognize early signs that warrant urgent ophthalmologic evaluation with case examples.
  9. Describe evidence-based strategies for preventing ocular trauma in young athletes, including the role of protective eyewear and anticipatory guidance during routine pediatric eyecare.
  10. Recognize and diagnose common dental injuries (e.g., tooth fractures, avulsion, luxation).
  11. Know when and how to re-implant a permanent tooth.
  12. Promote injury prevention strategies in leisure, sports and athletic settings.
  13. Review return to play protocol after concussion
  14. Discuss modified return to play protocol for patient’s experiencing persistent post concussion symptoms
  15. Avoiding Burnout and Building Mental Toughness- objective to follow

  17. Describe common infections associated with sports
  18. Identify strategies to prevent, detect, and respond to infections
  19. Recognize common pediatric hand and finger injuries
