Pediatric Pearls: Neonate, Newborn & Infancy

One-day virtual program designed for the primary care professionals covering topics that patients face in utero, at birth and through early infancy. Topics may include genetic testing in pregnant women, neonate stressors, circumcision, ambiguous genitalia, NICU graduate, infant sleep and SIDS, newborn screening and breastfeeding.

1. Manage growth and nutrition in the early post-discharge period
2. Identify and manage early developmental concerns
3. Describe classical presentation of inborn errors of metabolism
4. Review the approach to metabolic newborn screening program in Illinois
5. Evaluate newborn screening in management of emergent metabolic evaluations
6. Discuss genetic tests available in pregnancy
7. Compare and contrast screening versus diagnostic testing options
8. Describe features of common penile anomalies
9. Detail anatomic criteria for newborn circumcision suitability
10. Distinguish differences between newborn and operative circumcision procedures and timing
11. Outline features of contemporary multidisciplinary care for patients with differences of sex development (DSD)/intersex conditions
12. Describe common errors in car seat selection, installation, and use
13. Explain the current epidemiology of SIDS/SUID
14. Guide families on infant products for car seat and sleep
15. Discuss what makes late preterm infants different from term infants
16. Demonstrate/explain/describe ways to mitigate the challenges that late preterm infants initially have
17. Recognize the different patterns of excessive early infant crying
18. Consider common medical presentations
19. Develop effective family centered strategies for addressing excessive crying
