Overview
An annual two day child maltreatment symposium at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago that brings awareness to different aspects of child abuse and maltreatment to a diverse audience. The Child Maltreatment Symposium is composed of 9 lecturers who will present on topics associated with sub-populations and providers wellness components of child maltreatment and abuse. At this year's symposium, the Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics will collaborate virtually with experts within the field of pediatric medicine, law enforcement, social work, members of the legal community and those other specialty areas that are needed to combat child abuse and maltreatment.

Objectives
  1. List the components of a robust child abuse program to have in place before quality consultations for suspected physical abuse can be provided.
  2. Review how a child abuse consultation is most effectively framed.
  3. Recall the current evidence basis for racial disparities and bias in the evaluation of child physical abuse.
  4. Consider the underpinnings of these racial disparities.
  5. Review what types of evidence are helpful in investigating alleged sexual assaults.
  6. List the steps involved in producing DNA profile results from evidence samples and reference standards.
  7. Examine the basic concepts and terms related to gender and sexuality.
  8. Describe the unique risks and challenges faced by LGBTQ youth.
  9. Identify signs and symptoms of trauma in pediatric populations.
  10. Describe trauma-focused evidence-based treatment models (specifically Child Parent Psychotherapy; Attachment, Regulation, and Competency; Cognitive Processing Therapy; Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
  11. Identify the ways in which trauma-sensitive yoga differentiates from other yoga practices.
  12. Define developmental disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder and understand some of the communication characteristics that can present barriers to effective prevention, investigation and intervention in cases of sexual abuse.
  13. Learn the risk factors for sexual abuse that increase the vulnerability of this population to sexual abuse.
  14. Identify key factors that create uncertainty in a medical diagnosis.
  15. Develop an approach to improve communication around issues of uncertainty.
