18th Annual Midwest Hospital Medicine Conference

This educational initiative was developed to provide a forum for discussing and presenting laboratory and clinical research concerning the care of patients by hospitalists. The meeting is designed to facilitate a discussion of latest multidisciplinary techniques for hospitalists. Seventy-five percent of hospitalists now care for patients in the Intensive Care Unit, indicating a pressing need for competency-based education targeted at the management of critically ill patients. The goal of the pre-course is to provide clinically relevant evidenced-based updates on essential components of critical care including sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, liberation from mechanical ventilation, and cardiogenic shock.

1. Pre-course: Summarize two important critical care publications from the past year
2. Pre-course: Implement an evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment of pneumonia in the ICU
3. Pre-course: Describe which interventions for patients with ARDS are most likely to improve outcomes
4. Pre-course: List strategies to maximize the safety and efficacy of interfacility ICU transfers
5. Pre-course: Explain the components of the ABCDEF bundle
6. Pre-course: Describe differences between veno-arterial and veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
7. Explain current challenges and opportunities for hospital-based healthcare professionals
8. Describe approaches to clinical reasoning and diagnosis
9. Define methods to improve physical exam skills
10. Summarize evidence-based strategies for treatment of acute decompensated heart failure
11. Describe optimal approaches to management of patients with cirrhosis
12. Explain strategies for evaluating and mitigating risks for complications in the perioperative period
13. Summarize the most relevant and potentially practice-changing clinical research related to hospital medicine from the past year
