Overview
Post-acute care providers are responsible for complex patients in a variety of settings including rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, ambulatory care, and the home. Often these patients have multimorbidity and need procedures that require hospital or emergency room visits. Increasing post-acute providers' ability to perform these procedures can help avoid unnecessary and burdensome transitions of care and even rehospitalization and improve patient comfort and satisfaction. Using a mastery learning approach, providers enrolled in this course will receive training on four procedures commonly needed after hospitalization: joint aspiration/injection, gastrostomy tube removal/exchange, tracheostomy tube exchange, and suturing of wounds. Participants will complete a survey before starting the course asking demographic data and clinical experience and confidence in performing the four procedures. Baseline testing of participants' skill in performing each procedure will be conducted using checklists. For each procedure, training will include a didactic session followed by deliberate practice on a model with individualized feedback from instructors. Assessment of skill in performing each procedure will be measured using the same checklist before and after the training. For each procedure, participants must meet a minimum passing standard (MPS) on the checklist or will receive additional skills practice for that procedure. It is estimated that 20% of participants will need additional time. The course will conclude with a post- test asking participants to rate their confidence in performing each procedure and a course evaluation.

Objectives
  1. Demonstrate knee joint aspiration and injection.
  2. Complete a tracheostomy tube exchange.
  3. Demonstrate a gastrostomy tube removal and replacement.
  4. Practice proper suturing technique.
