Overview
A majority of children presenting to primary care clinics have a dermatologic complaint, whether primary or secondary. Primary care training programs have traditionally offered little formal dermatology instruction for their residents, and the current era of managed care is mandating that a larger proportion of these diseases be managed by the primary care physician and/or nurse practitioner. This course will focus on practical pediatric dermatology for the primary care provider, with emphasis on correct diagnosis, therapeutic options and clinical pearls. The target audience is pediatricians, family practitioners, dermatologists, nurses/nurse practitioners and residents in these programs. Lectures this year will cover the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of warts, molluscum and herpes infections; common fungal skin infections; psoriasis and other papulosquamous disorders in children; rashes in the neonate; atopic dermatitis; moles, melanoma and sun protection; emergency room pediatric dermatology; infestations, bites and insect repellents; common vascular disorders including hemangiomas and vascular malformations; acne vulgaris; and autoimmune disorders in children including vitiligo, alopecia areata, lupus, morphea/scleroderma and dermatomyositis. There will also be two ?Guess the Diagnosis!? lectures, with pediatric dermatology textbooks awarded at the end of the day for the top attendee scorers. The day will conclude with an open Ask the Pediatric Dermatologist? panel session.

Objectives
  1. Describe traditional and newer therapies for warts, molluscum and herpes infections.
  2. Diagnose and treat common fungal skin infections, including tinea capitis, kerion, tinea faciei, tinea pedis and tinea versicolor.
  3. Appreciate traditional and evolving therapies for psoriasis in children, and associated co-morbidities.
  4. Recognize common and less common skin disorders in neonates and young infants, and distinguish some disorders which may have clinical overlap.
  5. Review the development of an atopic dermatitis treatment regimen that is safe and effective in children, and recognize emerging co-morbidities and therapies.
  6. Distinguish common moles from more concerning melanocytic lesions, know when to refer for evaluation or excision, and become familiar with some sun-induced disorders and effective sun protection strategies.
  7. Differentiate urticaria from potential look alikes such as erythema multiforme and urticaria multiforme, and recognize concerning disorders such as Stevens Johnson syndrome, DRESS syndrome, and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome.
  8. Manage a variety of infestations based on updated recommendations (including the recommended approach to utilizing lice therapies), and recommend the safe use of insect repellents in pediatric patients.
  9. Review the classification of vascular skin lesions in children, and review diagnostic and treatment recommendations for infantile hemangiomas, vascular malformations, and associated syndromes.
  10. Develop an acne treatment plan for pediatric acne, and know when to refer for escalated treatments.
  11. Review the presentation and treatment options for some of the more common autoimmune skin conditions, including vitiligo, alopecia areata, lupus, morphea and dermatomyositis.
