Overview
Epilepsy affects 1-2% of the general population. Despite a wide selection of anti-epileptic medications, 30% of patients living with epilepsy fail to achieve seizure control with medication alone. Patients living with epilepsy are at an increased risk for premature death compared to the general population. A number of recent imaging and surgical innovations have advanced the field of epilepsy care substantially. This CME will review both the current standards of care as well as the many recent advances in the field of epilepsy care.

Objectives
  1. Apply the current standards of care in the treatment of epilepsy
  2. Prescribe the ideal seizure medications for the treatment of women of childbearing age with epilepsy
  3. Identify the risk factors for SUDEP and the best strategy for its prevention
  4. Use the diagnostic evaluation process when caring for a patient with refractory epilepsy
  5. Examine the recent surgical advances in the management of epilepsy
  6. Discuss the benefits of epilepsy surgery for both seizure control and quality of life
  7. Demonstrate increased competence in highest-quality care for patients living with epilepsy
