Overview
Lurie Children’s 15th Annual Chicago Sonographer Update, Echocardiographic Assessmentof the Cyanotic Newborn with Optional Hands-on Scanning Workshop will focus on the use of echocardiography to recognize and understand the importance of an accurate assessment of a cyanotic defect. This workshop was designed by sonographers, with the sonographer’s learning experience in mind. The meeting will encompass specific anatomic features of congenital heart disease to allow the sonographer to recognize defects in the fetus, neonate and child. Lurie Children’s pediatric cardiologists with expertise in the diagnosis and management of congenital heart disease will lead the lectures. Our keynote address by Dr. Wayne Tworetzky, a leader in fetal cardiology, will focus on advances in prenatal evaluation of cyanotic heart disease. The small-group, hands-on scanning sessions will be led by senior cardiac sonographers and will give participants an opportunity to improve their understanding of anatomy and scanning technique for assessing types of cyanotic congenital heart disease. Participants will scan patients with normal anatomy with emphasis on subcostal and suprasternal notch views thatare diagnostic for cyanotic heart disease. Printed materials demonstrating various cyanoticlesions will be provided.Interesting cases will be presented simultaneous to the hands-on scanning sessions, focusing on clinical presentation and emphasizing the importance of understanding each cyanotic defect for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Objectives
  1. Recognize echocardiographic abnormalities seen in association with cyanotic anomalies
  2. Identify surgical repairs and/or palliations of cyanotic heart anomalies
  3. Comprehend the limitations of echocardiography and the need for multi-modality imaging
  4. Apply the imaging views and techniques taught in the conference into day-to-day practice
  5. Identify advances made in prenatal evaluation of cyanotic heart disease
