Overview
One-day lecture for primary care providers speaking on conditions and injuries impacting their young patient athletes and how to manage them. Topics will include allergy-induced asthma, sports and activity with CHD, ACL injuries, eye injuries, dental trauma, return to play after concussion and other injuries, infectious risks with sports participation, finger and hand injuries and finally avoiding burnout and keeping a positive attitude.

Objectives
  1. Identify history and exam findings that should prompt imaging and/or orthopaedic referral
  2. Describe the short – and long-term consequences of ACL injury
  3. Identify two common pediatric sports injuries/growth-related concerns
  4. Discuss guidance regarding safe return to play
  5. Define EIB and understand its clinical significance in athletic populations
  6. Explain key pathophysiology mechanisms and environmental triggers of EIB
  7. Implement comprehensive prevention & treatment strategies
  8. Review hand and finger exam and recognize common injuries
  9. Discuss management strategies for pediatric hand and finger injuries
  10. Recognize potential activity/sports limitations/restrictions for different forms of pediatric heart disease
  11. Dispel some myths and hopefully alleviate some angst regarding pediatric cardiac disease and exercise
  12. Identify common sports related eye injuries and risk factors and describe strategies to reduce ocular injury
  13. Describe the effect of a concussion on the visual system and the post- concussion vision syndrome
  14. Discuss management strategies to minimize symptoms and improve recovery time
  15. Recognize and diagnose common dental injuries(e.g., tooth fractures, avulsion, luxation)
  16. Manage common dental emergencies and knowhow to differentiate those requiring emergent dental care versus prompt outpatient follow-up
  17. Differentiate primary versus permanent teeth and educate families on dental trauma prevention
  18. Recognize common infections associated with sports
  19. Identify strategies to detect, prevent and respond to infections
  20. Name two signs of burnout in youth athletes in competitive sports and name two strategies for promoting resilience in youth athletes in competitive sports
