Opioids: Pain, Safe Prescribing, and Addiction - Opioid Use in Special Populations: Pregnant and Lactating Women

Through a series of short online learning modules, healthcare professionals across the continuum of education with develop new strategies for safe opioid prescribing practices. This will include such as the epidemiology of opioid use, eliciting a substance use history, the initiation of opioids, risk assessment of monitoring, opioid reversal agents, abuse/misuse/addiction, medication assisted therapy, and the risk of polypharmacy.

1. Describe opioid use and prescribing patterns in the United States.
2. Utilize validated screening tools to safely initiatie opioids.
3. Access the IL prescription monitoring program and accurately interpret urine drug screening.
4. Initiate individual goal setting for patients with pain.
5. Describe appropriate indications for opioid reversal agents.
6. Identify patients at risk for abuse and misuse of opioids.
7. Assess the role of Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT).
8. Describe when and how to wean opioids.
