Pediatric Dermatology for the Practitioner

Pediatric Dermatology for the Practitioner will be a one-day course providing up-to-date clinical topics relevant for primary care providers that see children with skin disease. The event includes eleven 30-minute lectures, a quiz section and question and answer sessions.

1. Acknowledge the presentations, associations and burden of pediatric atopic dermatitis, and design a sensible therapy regimen for mild to moderate disease, while understanding when to refer and appreciating newer and evolving therapies.
2. Recognize common newborn skin conditions that do not require active intervention, and identify cutaneous lesions with a higher risk for morbidity or mortality.
3. Correctly distinguish and diagnose annular eruptions such as urticaria multiforme, serum sickness-like reaction and erythema multiforme, and recognize life-threatening eruptions such as drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms and Stevens Johnson syndrome
4. Distinguish common moles from more concerning melanocytic lesions and Spitz nevi, know when to refer for evaluation or excision, and reinforce knowledge of effective sun protection strategies
5. Identify and differentiate common bacterial skin infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci, recognize more serious bacterial infections that require prompt therapy, and review appropriate therapy for these skin infections.
6. Review the clinical features of hair disorders and how to differentiate between them, identify presentations of common nail disorders in treatment along with their disease associations, and appreciate management of common hair and nail disorders
7. Identify risk factors and recommended laboratory evaluation for patients with alopecia areata, vitiligo and lichen sclerosus, and learn about clinical safety and efficacy of new and emerging therapies.
8. Identify different types of warts and molluscum (along with associated dermatoses), appreciate both home-based and office-based treatment options, and recognize and treat Herpes simplex virus infections
9. Recognize common dermatophyte infections such as tinea capitis, kerion and onychomycosis; identify clinical features of common Candidal infections; understand the presentation for various Malassezia-associated disorders; and approach management for these conditions
10. Review hemangioma subtypes and associations, appreciate published practice guidelines and the importance of early treatment, identify which lesions should be observed versus treated (or referred for therapy), identify capillary malformations along with syndrome associations, and know when to refer these patients.
11. Diagnose neonatal, infantile, mid-childhood and adolescent acne; recommend the appropriate evaluation for mid-childhood acne; prescribe treatment regimens for various acne presentations based on age, severity, and published treatment algorithms
12. Test their knowledge of dermatological conditions based on clinical presentation and lesional morphology of several clinical “unknowns”.
